I love summer because I love to play outdoors! Hiking, picnicking, bicycling, boating – all are fun summer activities! But, you don’t want to look frumpy and dumpy when you are enjoying an outdoor adventure. What should an active petite wear to keep looking her best?

Hiking Hottie

Do you love to hike and camp but hate the baggy, lumpy, sweaty duds that are usually seen on the trails? We have some ideas that will keep you comfy and cute while you are enjoying a nice hike in the woods – whether a ten mile trek or a quick jaunt to a nice picnic spot.

Shorts

Is it hot and steamy in the jungles where you roam? If so, you gotta wear shorts on the trails. I think most petites look best in two styles of shorts – either Bermuda knee-length or short shorts. I’m not talking about booty baring, just shorter styles that lengthen your great gams! The styles below would be great for a hike because they are cotton and not too heavy. These “safari” shorts by Ann Taylor Loft are so cute and have a bit of spandex for added comfort! I like the cargo style pockets, great for slipping in a Larabar or other snacks. These sunny yellow shorts from JCrew would also be great on the trail. If you are looking for something a little less expensive, try Old Navy, they have these great shorts for less than $25!

Pants

Are there lots of bugs and brambles on your adventures? If so, pants are the best way to go. They protect your legs from scratches and stings. Once again, I recommend a light pair to keep you cool on a hot summer day. This light stretch nylon pair at Athleta.com is abrasion resistant and comes in petite. They even have eight pockets for all your accessories and snacks! If you like the comfort of stretchy pants, why not go for these classic yoga pants from Victoria’s Secret? They come in different lengths and many colors.

Tops

What to wear with your sexy shorts or polished pants? Layers! The best thing to wear when hiking. It might be cool in the trees but hot on the ridgetop. A breeze might pick up while you picnic. You want to be comfy so dress in layers. I wear a light tee or tank top, and then add either a thin long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt depending on the weather. I like to get my tank tops at Old Navy. They have plenty of colors and they are inexpensive so I can get more than one! American Apparel has great thin tees, both long sleeves and short sleeves, in many colors.

Do you need help finding great hiking shoes? I like the low top shoes, rather than the boots. They are just more comfortable to me and I think maybe they make my legs look a bit longer. But it depends on the types of trails you hike and the distances you travel. For shorter dry hikes I find I can get away with just my running shoes.

Have fun out on the trails!

Next Wednesday – enjoying the summer by boating or biking? What to wear……
